In an almost mind blowing act of coincidence there is another movie about a mall cop scheduled to be released. I am speaking of the Seth Rogan vehicle "Observe and Protect" (it appears that the title has been changed from "Observe and Report) So perhaps we are witness to a new genre being born. The genre of the mall cop, perhaps I was to quick to dismiss the power of Paul Blart (The Original Mall Cop) because after seeing the trailer that I am posting below. (Redband may be NSFW) you will be enlightened.
I actually enjoyed this preview but I will confess to being a Rogan fan from back when he was on the truly inspired "Freaks and Geeks" see it if you get a chance. So I am a little biased to begin with but I felt that I watched the trailer with an open mind and I was pleasantly surprised. So let me know what you think. Though I wonder does Ray Liotta consider this a step down from "Good Fellas" or a step up from "Wild Hogs".

This should be funny, so far Rogan has not failed to amuse. But it does point out the issue that Hollywood in general has with original concepts. I am willing to lay money down that when Paul Blart was greenlit, some other studio found out and starting pushing a script that was wallowing in obscurity out to get their version of a Mall Cop movie made. It has happened so often in the past it's hard not to believe it is the way they create films. We had 3 or 4 under sea movies with monsters in them come out with in a few months of each other. Children's fantasy movies have been dumped on us since the popularity of the Potter films. With the success of slumdog I wouldn't be surprised to have a slate of similar type "bollywood" musicals to start spewing forth, they've already got what 12 high school musicals out now?
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a huge train wreck.
ReplyDeleteThe kind of train wreck where you stop the car, get out and take pictures to relive later because your secretly enjoying it.
Though I wonder does Ray Liotta consider this a step down from "Good Fellas" or a step up from "Wild Hogs".

If he possesses any self awareness he sighed, looked at the floor, and accepted - knowing any step is a good step at this point. It's okay Ray, that bottle of scotch will never let you down.
